Meteorological patterns indicate that Tamil Nadu is entering a phase of increased precipitation expected to last until Sunday, August 4. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the uptick in wet weather will primarily target the Western Ghats and northern coastal belts. While a 20% rainfall deficit currently persists for the Southwest monsoon season, experts believe this incoming cycle could mitigate the shortfall.

Projected Precipitation and Wind Patterns

The RMC has identified specific areas for heavy rainfall over the coming days:

• Thursday: Isolated areas within the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts face heavy rain threats.
• Friday and Saturday: Intense showers are expected to move toward the southern districts of Kanniyakumari, Theni, and Tirunelveli.
• Coastal Regions: North coastal Tamil Nadu may see moderate rainfall, supported by a feeble trough along the coast and sea breeze onset.

V.R. Durai, Head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, attributes these changes to active monsoon conditions in Kerala and wind convergence linked to a weather system near Odisha. Residents should also prepare for gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 kmph during this period.

Temperature Moderation Expected

The state has recently endured harsh thermal conditions, with Madurai Airport peaking above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday before slightly dipping to 39 degrees on Wednesday. In the capital, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded highs of 37.8 and 37.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Forecasters anticipate a notable cooling effect in the interior districts starting Friday. Chennai is slated for light to moderate evening showers through Thursday, with daytime temperatures hovering around 38 degrees Celsius.
