Tamil Nadu Engineer’s AI Platform Scales Remote Maternal Care for Three Million Women
Engineer Senthil Kumar Murugesan developed a low-cost wearable and AI system to bridge gaps in rural pregnancy monitoring. The initiative now identifies life-threatening risks for Re 1 per day across four Indian states.

Engineering a Solution for Rural Maternal Health
In rural India, the journey to clinical check-ups often prevents expectant mothers from receiving essential care. Statistics indicate that only 54% of women in these regions complete the four recommended antenatal visits. This logistical gap frequently results in late-stage complications that could have been mitigated through consistent observation. Senthil Kumar Murugesan, a former engineer at Samsung and Qualcomm, founded JioVio Healthcare in 2019 to address these systemic failures after witnessing his sister encounter similar obstacles.
The Role of IoT and Predictive AI
The core of the initiative is a proprietary wearable device named Allowear. Distributed to high-risk expectant mothers, the device monitors vital metrics including pulse rate, physical activity, sleep patterns, and caloric expenditure. It also serves as a mechanical reminder for medication schedules. Data collected via Bluetooth is uploaded to a cloud-based platform by ASHA workers, allowing medical professionals to review patient health in real-time without requiring the mother to travel to a facility.
By the second trimester, the integrated AI analyzes this data to predict potential complications. This early identification enables doctors to intervene with nutritional adjustments or medical treatments for issues like abnormal blood pressure and fluctuating blood sugar before they reach a critical state.
Impact and Scalability at Minimal Cost
The program operates at a cost of just Re 1 per day, with the financial burden covered by government subsidies to ensure universal accessibility. Since its inception, the service has reached over 30 lakh mothers across 14,328 villages in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Key operational achievements include:
- Implementation of a 1,000-day comprehensive care cycle.
- Successful management and support of 7,320 high-risk pregnancies.
- Integration of 1,000 community health workers into a digital monitoring network.
By shifting the focus from reactive hospital visits to proactive remote monitoring, the platform allows for the early detection of nutritional deficiencies and other warning signs, significantly improving safety outcomes for both mother and child in underserved communities.
