Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, who rose from street busking to Academy Award glory, died Wednesday following a motorcycle crash in County Dublin. Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the single-vehicle accident during the early morning hours. Management for the 56-year-old artist confirmed his passing later that day, asking for privacy on behalf of his family. Hansard is survived by his wife, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their young son.

From The Frames to Oscar Recognition

Hansard first established his reputation as the leader of the rock group The Frames before achieving international stardom in the 2007 independent film Once. In the movie, he starred alongside Markéta Irglová; the duo co-wrote the ballad Falling Slowly, which earned the 2008 Oscar for Best Original Song. Directed by John Carney, the film’s success eventually led to a Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation. Hansard and Irglová continued their collaboration as The Swell Season, while Hansard also maintained a prolific solo career featuring five studio albums and multiple Grammy nominations.
