In a move to modernize long-range maritime safety, Fisheries Minister A. Srinath distributed satellite communication units to 74 fishermen in Tharuvaikulam, Thoothukudi, on Sunday, July 26, 2026. This technological deployment targets deep-sea mariners who have significantly expanded their operational range. While regional fishing activity previously focused on areas within 300 nautical miles, modern crews now navigate up to 1,000 nautical miles from the coast.

Fiscal Framework and Technical Specifications

The state facilitated this acquisition through a structured financial aid program. Key financial details include:

• Retail Cost: Each satellite phone and SIM card unit is valued at ₹1,34,166.
• Subsidization: The government contributed 40% of the total acquisition cost to lower the barrier for traditional fishermen.

These devices ensure that crews remain within reach of emergency services and administrative authorities even when they move beyond the coverage limits of traditional terrestrial networks.

Addressing Community Infrastructure Demands

During the event, which included top officials from the Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department, Minister Srinath engaged with Tharuvaikulam residents regarding local infrastructure and welfare concerns. He acknowledged an official list of demands submitted by the community, stating that the administration intended to resolve these grievances. The Minister emphasized that maintaining a communication link is a primary safety requirement for those engaging in high-seas commerce.
