Infrastructure and Transit Deadlocks Addressed
In a recent session of the District Development Committee, District Collector Annie Jula Thomas mandated the immediate resolution of traffic bottlenecks currently plaguing the Mevaram-Kollam highway. The administration is prioritizing commuter relief as the Polayathode railway overbridge construction progresses, requiring the urgent establishment of temporary passage routes. Furthermore, the KSRTC faces scrutiny over reports of night buses bypassing service roads on the Kottiyam-Chathannur stretch, prompting orders for stricter operational adherence. A new bus route linking Kottarakkara to the Parippally Medical College is slated for an imminent launch.
Healthcare Capacity and Disease Prevention
The committee outlined several tactical moves to strengthen district health facilities. The District Hospital in Kollam will see the removal of accumulated soil to reclaim site utility, while the Kadakkal Taluk Hospital is set for expansion through new land acquisition. The Karunagappally Taluk Hospital will fill gaps in medical staffing by recruiting temporary doctors. To date, health initiatives have resulted in 94 medical camps and 344 awareness programs aimed at curbing infectious diseases. Strategic coordination is also being ramped up to boost the operational footprint of the Parippally Government Medical College.
Land Rights and Resource Management
Large-scale projects, including the Kollam Greenfield National Highway beginning at Kadampattukonam, now face intensified oversight to speed up land acquisition. The Geology Department received directives to finalize land-related verifications without delay, while the Irrigation Department must focus on the maintenance of dams and check dams within the Kallada Irrigation Project. Other key updates include:
- Allocation of school repair funds by the District Panchayat contingent on prompt estimate submissions.
- Expansion of street dog shelter programs to all local body levels.
- Strict utilization of allocated financial resources to prevent budget lapses.
