Coastal Patrol Forces Decisive Move Against Beedi Leaf Smuggling Ring in Thoothukudi
Police intercepted a major contraband shipment at Inigo Nagar beach, seizing over a metric ton of beedi leaves. The cargo was staged for maritime transit to Sri Lanka before authorities intervened during an early morning operation.
Intercepted Shipment at Inigo Nagar Beach
Law enforcement authorities in Thoothukudi disrupted a coordinated attempt to traffic prohibited goods to Sri Lanka in the early hours of Saturday. During a targeted patrol of the Inigo Nagar beach zone, the Q branch police discovered a logistics operation in progress. The team identified a mini load van containing 36 industrial-sized bundles. Each package weighed approximately 35 kilograms, totaling 1,260 kilograms of beedi leaves.
Logistics and Investigation
Despite the swift arrival of the patrol units, the individuals organizing the transit managed to evade capture. The suspects abandoned both the vehicle and the extensive cargo to avoid apprehension by the Q branch officers. Current evidence suggests the proximity to the shoreline was intended to facilitate a swift transfer to a sea vessel.
Following the seizure, the Q branch police formalised the transfer of the 1,260 kilograms of beedi leaves and the transport vehicle to the Customs department for further processing. Investigative teams are now tracing the ownership of the van to identify the network members who fled the scene. The operation concluded on July 26, 2026, as officials continue to probe the supply chain providing these materials for international smuggling.
