Tiruchi Scales Up Canine Vaccination Efforts to Combat Rabies Risk

Strategic Expansion of Inoculation Teams

Tiruchi Corporation is augmenting its public health infrastructure by deploying more dog-catching teams to accelerate a city-wide anti-rabies campaign. Currently, three specialized units led by veterinary professionals manage the field operations. City Health Officer M. Karthikeyan indicated that the scaled-up workforce aims to facilitate the vaccination of approximately 3,000 stray dogs every month.

Data-Driven Health Initiatives

The scale of the challenge remains substantial according to recent census data. A 2025 survey estimated the stray dog population within the city limits at 43,767. Recent progress reports provide the following metrics for the municipal program:

• Completed Sterilizations: 34,561 dogs have undergone the Animal Birth Control (ABC) process and rabies vaccination to date.
• Recent Monthly Activity: Since January 2026, 7,910 dogs have received anti-rabies shots.
• Sterilization Targets: Teams currently capture and sterilize roughly 40 stray dogs daily.
• Historical Reach: Throughout 2025, officials administered booster doses to approximately 5,000 dogs.

Maintenance of Herd Immunity via Boosters

Public health experts emphasize that initial vaccination is insufficient for long-term protection; canines require booster doses every two years. To address this, the current drive specifically targets dogs with identifying ear notches, signifying prior sterilization. Teams identify, catch, and re-vaccinate 170 to 200 of these marked animals every day before returning them to their original neighborhoods.

District Collector Pratik Tayal and Corporation Commissioner Veer Pratap Singh have conducted reviews of the operational logistics. Their directives mandate the safe handling and capture of animals throughout the intensified campaign to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
