Tamil Nadu Teacher Transforms School Classrooms into Train Coaches, Boosting Enrollment

Pethanayakanur Government High School in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, has experienced a significant increase in student enrollment, reaching over 210 students from a previous figure of 70 in 2012. This transformation began in stages, driven primarily by Tamil teacher Balamurugan, with other staff members contributing to a collective effort.

The most recent initiative involved painting classrooms to resemble colorful train coaches. This project was implemented after the COVID-19 pandemic to create an exciting welcome for students returning to in-person learning. The school greeted students with music and celebrations, making the return memorable for students like Manimekalai, a Class 10 student.

The school's physical environment underwent changes starting in 2013, when Balamurugan joined. One of his initial efforts focused on the school grounds, leading to the planting of 110 saplings within a week, which now provide shade.

From 2015 to 2017, environmental education became a focus. Students engaged in activities such as collecting native seeds, creating seed balls, and participating in biodiversity and conservation programs. Over time, students have planted more than 960 saplings and made 45,000 seed balls for reforestation efforts. The school also promotes a green, clean, and plastic-free environment, encouraging alternatives to plastic-packaged sweets during celebrations.
