Allegations of a Bipartisan Shadow Business
During the opening of the Kerala Khadi Board’s Onam fair on July 26, 2026, Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran leveled serious charges of political collusion. Speaking directly to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, the veteran legislator claimed that specific factions within the Congress and certain CPI(M) leaders in Alappuzha have established an unprincipled partnership. Sudhakaran characterized this arrangement as a joint business venture operated by criminal elements from both sides, designed to facilitate systemic corruption. He stated he could provide evidence to support these claims, describing the situation as an opportunistic move that abandons traditional political boundaries.
Police Conduct and Intelligence Gaps
Beyond his claims of political entanglement, Sudhakaran expressed frustration over perceived failures within the Kerala Police and municipal leadership. He recounted a recent civic reception hosted by the Alappuzha municipality, where he arrived as an invited guest only to find an empty venue. Upon his departure, he was confronted by a group of protesters carrying placards. Sudhakaran alleged that:
- Local police officers were aware of the impending demonstration but failed to notify him.
- The Municipal Chairperson and Congress personnel possessed prior knowledge of the protest.
- The lack of an advance warning constituted a significant intelligence oversight by the security force.
Official Responses to the Controversy
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, who was present for the address, characterized the MLA's accusations as local matters and claimed to have no prior information regarding the alleged nexus. While he did not validate the corruption claims, Chennithala did address the ongoing hostility directed at Sudhakaran. He called upon the CPI(M) to cease public intimidation tactics, including the use of black flags, and urged the party to respect the democratic mandate of the Ambalappuzha representative.
