South Indian Specialty Teas Take Center Stage at TNAU Industry Symposium
The Tea Board India and TNAU organized a high-level tea fair to bridge the gap between small-scale growers and global markets. This strategic event focused on regional identity, branding, and entrepreneurial integration for South India’s tea sector.
Strategic Collaboration Targets Market Expansion
In a coordinated effort to elevate regional tea varieties, the Tea Board India partnered with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's (TNAU) Directorate of Agribusiness Development for a dedicated Tea Fair. On July 25, 2026, the university grounds became a hub for the Nilgiris, Wayanad, Karnataka, and the Anamalai Hills' high ranges. The summit successfully gathered 110 participants, including buyers, sellers, and independent small-scale growers, to showcase high-quality harvests from varied agro-climatic zones.
Empowering Growers and Students
E. Somasundaram, TNAU's Director of Agribusiness Development, advocated for the formal aggregation of small-scale tea producers. He noted that collective branding is a necessary strategy for local growers to compete effectively against entrenched corporate entities. The fair wasn't limited to commerce; it served as an educational platform for 530 students and 30 scientists who analyzed flavor profiles and regional quality standards. Acting Vice-Chancellor K. Subrahmaniyan indicated that the tea value chain offers substantial career paths for budding entrepreneurs within the student body.
Innovation and Market Positioning
- Direct Engagement: Interactive sessions allowed stakeholders to exchange data on specialty tea marketing, evolving consumer preferences, and modern packaging requirements.
- Industry Expertise: Rajeev Baid, proprietor of West Bengal-based Chai Chun Tea Boutique, shared his professional journey to illustrate successful entrepreneurship.
- Regional Excellence: M. Bharani Kumaar of the Tea Board’s South Zonal Office highlighted that South India maintains a diverse portfolio of world-class teas defined by unique elevations and climate conditions.
The Tea Board India concluded the sessions by emphasizing that technology, value addition, and rigorous quality assurance will define the industry's trajectory. By exposing students to these practical business dynamics, organizers aim to integrate fresh talent into the evolving Indian tea market.
