Snapchat Integrates Live Music Sharing Through Global Snap Map Expansion
Snapchat has introduced Now Playing, a real-time music sharing tool integrated directly into its Snap Map interface. The initial rollout features Spotify connectivity, allowing users to broadcast their current tracks to friends.
Real-Time Audio Integration on Snap Map
Snapchat is expanding the utility of its Snap Map by introducing Now Playing, a feature that permits users to broadcast their live audio streams to friends. Initially launching with Spotify integration, the tool transforms the location-based map into a platform for social music discovery. Beyond the map, the update connects with Spotlight, Snapchat's short-form video feed. Users can now directly save tracks discovered in Spotlight videos to their Spotify accounts or navigate to the song's specific landing page on the streaming service.
Privacy Controls and Activity Tracking
The system operates under specific visibility and inactivity rules to manage user data. Sharing remains active only if a user has launched the Snapchat application within the previous 24 hours. Should a user remain inactive beyond that window, the broadcast pauses automatically until the app is reopened. Snap has also included several manual controls for those seeking temporary or permanent privacy:
- Individual selection of who can view listening activity.
- The ability to pause broadcasting for three hours.
- A 24-hour mute option for music sharing.
- Complete, indefinite deactivation of the feature.
The system is designed to show only live activity; it does not display a user's chronological listening history or the last song played once the stream ends.
The Competitive Landscape of Social Discovery
This move positions Snap against rivals like TikTok and Instagram, both of which have aggressive music-sharing strategies. TikTok currently allows song sharing from external streamers, while Instagram utilizes its Notes feature for status-based music updates. Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, noted that the integration adds a layer of personal expression to the platform, which currently sees more than 450 million monthly active users on the Snap Map alone. Since its 2017 debut as a location-sharing tool, the Map has evolved to include local business hotspots and public activities. The Now Playing rollout is currently hitting regions where both Spotify and Snapchat operate, with availability in Canada expected in the near future.
