Shivamogga Zoo Sends Indian Gaurs to Patna for Wolves and Gharials

Two male Indian gaurs were transported from the Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari in Shivamogga to Patna, Bihar, on Thursday as part of an animal exchange initiative. The Shivamogga zoo is slated to receive eight wolves and four gharials in return for the gaurs.

The transport involved two trucks departing the safari around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, with an expected arrival in Patna by Saturday evening. A team accompanying the gaurs included a Veterinary Officer, a Range Forest Officer, a Deputy Range Forest Officer, two animal keepers, and two drivers. Officials conducted a restraint operation, including crate training and physical restraint, before the animals were moved.

According to V.M. Amarakshara, Executive Director of the Shivamogga Zoo, the two gaurs were compatible, possessed calm temperaments, and were trained for crate travel. The team returning from Patna will be responsible for bringing the wolves and gharials back. Staff are scheduled to depart Patna by August 18, requiring adjustments to the crates to accommodate the incoming animals. Shivamogga is providing two trucks for the safe transit of the animals.

This marks the second time Indian gaurs have been transported from Shivamogga Zoo under an exchange program, with a previous instance involving transport to the Indore Zoo.
