Nolan Identifies Satyajit Ray as Master of Cinema

During a recent visit to the Criterion Closet in New York, filmmaker Christopher Nolan lauded Satyajit Ray's contribution to global cinema, specifically highlighting The Apu Trilogy. Nolan described Ray as one of the greatest Indian filmmakers after viewing Pather Panchali, the 1955 debut that launched the series. While many cinephiles consider the entire narrative essential viewing, Nolan admitted he has yet to watch the final two segments and intends to finish the saga using the Criterion collection.

The Legacy of the Apu Saga

Ray's trilogy serves as a chronological exploration of the character Apu, tracking his evolution from a rural childhood in Bengal to his experiences as an adult. The series consists of three distinct chapters:

• Pather Panchali (1955): The series opener which Nolan noted as an "incredible film" that profoundly affected his perspective.
• Aparajito (1956): The second installment, which earned the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
• Apur Sansar (1959): The concluding chapter of the protagonist's life journey.

These films secured significant international accolades, including the Best Human Document award at Cannes and several President's Gold Medals at India's National Film Awards.

The director's public endorsement of Ray comes as his own latest feature, The Odyssey, continues its commercial run. The project has already grossed over $300 million at the worldwide box office. This new production features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Zendaya as Athena. The film also stars Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron in central roles.
