A Damascus criminal court has sentenced former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher to death in absentia for crimes against humanity. The ruling also includes the first major conviction of a detained official, former security chief Atef Najib, for his role in the 2011 Deraa crackdown.
