West Bengal to Include Syama Prasad Mookerjee's Contributions in Textbooks

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that the contributions of Syama Prasad Mookerjee will be incorporated into the state's school textbooks from the upcoming academic year. This inclusion aims to highlight Mookerjee's role in ensuring West Bengal remained part of India.

The decision was formalized during the inaugural meeting of a special committee established to organize programs commemorating the 125th birth anniversary of the Jana Sangh founder. According to Mr. Adhikari, the Education Department will introduce a specific section on Syama Prasad Mookerjee in the curriculum for both school and university levels. He also mentioned plans to erect a statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee at Eco Park and establish a library at his ancestral home in Jeerat, Hooghly.

The report notes that Syama Prasad Mookerjee is considered a significant ideological figure for the BJP. The party, upon gaining power, has been actively pursuing the construction of statues and memorials in his honor. The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, had previously attended an event in Kolkata to mark Syama Prasad Mookerjee's birth anniversary in July of the previous year. Additionally, a street in Rampurhat, Birbhum, previously named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, was recently renamed in honor of Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
