Visakhapatnam Braces for 500,000 Devotees in Annual Simhachalam Trek
Authorities expect a record turnout for the Giri Pradakshina circumambulation in Visakhapatnam this Tuesday. A multi-agency task force has deployed over 5,000 personnel to manage logistics and security for the event.
Strategic Deployment and Crowd Management
District officials in Visakhapatnam have finalized a comprehensive operational plan for the annual Giri Pradakshina of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. Following last year's participation of 3.5 lakh people, the administration has prepared for an influx exceeding 500,000 devotees. While the trek begins at Tholi Pavancha in the early morning hours of Tuesday, official projections indicate the highest concentration of pilgrims will occur following the afternoon departure of the ceremonial chariot (ratham).
To maintain order, a workforce of 5,000 government volunteers is active throughout Tuesday and Wednesday. This contingent includes 2,700 police officers tasked with security and traffic flow. Coordination is being handled through a dedicated Command & Control Centre (CCC) at Tholi Pavancha, overseen by senior law enforcement leadership. Total coverage along the route is bolstered by 28 help centers managed by Revenue and Police departments.
Infrastructure and Public Health Initiatives
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has implemented a high-intensity sanitation and utility schedule to accommodate the crowds. The logistics include:
- Sanitation: 3,033 workers operating in seven shifts to maintain route hygiene.
- Hydration: 114 water points stocked with 17,000 cans of 20-liter capacity each.
- Sanitation Facilities: 727 toilets, including 157 permanent units.
- Bathing Stations: 50 shower units separated by gender and specialized swimmers stationed at Appughar and Jodugullapalem beaches for those performing holy dips.
Traffic Adaptations and Safety Measures
Broad traffic diversions will take effect Tuesday afternoon to clear pathways for the circumambulation. Authorities have announced total vehicle prohibitions on the Simhachalam-Hanumanthawaka stretch. Furthermore, segments of National Highway-16 between Visakha Valley Junction and Maddilapalem, as well as the Kurupam Junction-Jodugullapalem route, will face strict restrictions.
Secondary support systems integrated into the route include mobile medical camps, standby ambulances, and public announcement systems. Continuous electronic monitoring through CCTV networks will provide the Command & Control Centre with real-time data to prevent bottlenecking and ensure pilgrim safety during the peak hours of the ritual.
