Vijayan Defends Political Continuity in Memorial Address

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan utilized a commemorative event on August 2, 2026, to challenge the notion that consecutive terms for a single political front damage the democratic process. Speaking at the first death anniversary of the late M.K. Sanoo, Vijayan asserted that the renowned literary critic and former MLA never viewed sustained rule by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) as a hazard to the state. The address, organized by the Prof. M.K. Sanoo Master Samskarika Kendram, served as a platform for the Chief Minister to address cultural figures who have expressed concerns over the LDF's grip on power.

Implicit Critique of Literary Dissent

During his speech, Vijayan suggested that some public figures attempt to bolster their reputations by criticizing the Left from within its own circles. He contrasted this with Sanoo Master’s approach, stating that the late orator understood his standing in the public eye and did not require manufactured controversies for acceptance. These remarks appeared to be a response to previous statements by former Kerala Sahitya Akademi president K. Satchidanandan, whose warnings regarding prolonged LDF rule created significant political friction before the Assembly elections. Vijayan specifically highlighted Sanoo’s dignified tenure in the same Akademi role as a model of leadership.

Inaugural Sanoo Sammanam Awarded

The day's proceedings included the presentation of the first Sanoo Sammanam to M. Leelavathy at her residence in Thrikkakara. The lifetime achievement honor includes a ₹1 lakh cash prize, a certificate, and a statuette. While expressing grief over the loss of her colleague, Leelavathy accepted the award as a symbol of their long-standing professional bond and announced she would donate the prize money to Kanivu Pain and Palliative Care. The ceremony also recognized historian Vinil Paul with the Yuvaprathibha Puraskaram.
