During a session on July 30, 2026, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) councillor G. Gopinath challenged the current visual hierarchy inside the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council Hall. He called for the immediate restoration of B.R. Ambedkar’s portrait to a place of honor alongside Mahatma Gandhi, specifically above the seats occupied by the Mayor and the Commissioner.
Current Photographic Alignment
The controversy emerged following a shift in the hall's interior layout. According to Gopinath, the prominent wall space directly behind the executive chairs now features portraits of current Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. This reconfiguration resulted in the displacement of other figures, including:
- B.R. Ambedkar: Moved from a central location to the opposite wall.
- Thiruvalluvar: Similarly relocated away from the primary focal point of the chamber.
Gopinath argued that Ambedkar’s contributions necessitate a placement that mirrors the visibility afforded to Gandhi.
Official Response and Constraints
Mayor R. Priya addressed the concerns by citing physical limitations within the historic Ripon Buildings. She noted that the Council Hall faces significant wall space restrictions, which dictated the recent changes. However, the Mayor confirmed that the GCC would investigate the feasibility of Gopinath's proposal to see if the portraits could be rearranged to accommodate his request without violating spatial constraints.
