Upcycling and Electronics: Kerala Municipal Workers Redefine Waste Management
Haritha Karma Sena members in Varkala are transforming discarded textiles and electronics into marketable goods. This initiative leverages micro-enterprise loans to reduce landfill reliance while providing free clothing and repair services.
Textile Recovery and the Swap Shop Model
In Varkala municipality, the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) consortium has moved beyond simple waste collection to establish a sophisticated system for textile recovery. Guided by Secretary Bindu S. and President Shibitha S.S., the group meticulously sorts clothing collected during door-to-door drives. While severely damaged garments are sent to Powergreen Eco Solutions at Oonninmoodu for industrial recycling, quality items are laundered and placed in a municipal swap shop. This facility allows residents, some traveling from as far as Kollam, to acquire saris, children's clothing, and other apparel at no cost.
Value-Added Manufacturing from Scrap
The transformation of waste reaches into the local garment industry, where HKS members collect scrap cloth from numerous tailoring shops. Instead of allowing these remnants to reach landfills, a 10-member micro-enterprise team upcycles the material into pillows and vibrant footmats. A recent loan from the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) has enabled this group to scale operations. These funds are designated for machinery to produce specialized products like uniforms and emblems. Additionally, the team manufactures cloth bags to support waste-reduction protocols during major local events such as Karkidaka Vavu.
Technical Diversification in Ottoor
The scope of the HKS mission extends to electronics and biochemistry in the Ottoor panchayat. Five members have specialized in the production and maintenance of LED bulbs, successfully bidding for panchayat tenders to supply between 1,500 and 2,000 units for public lamp posts. According to Geetha, the consortium secretary, the team can produce up to 5,000 bulbs in a single day, serving both municipal and domestic needs. Other specialized activities in the block include:
- Inoculum Production: Four members manufacture the biological agents required for green bins to convert organic waste into compost.
- Event Management: A three-member team operates a rental service for steel utensils to eliminate single-use plastics at public functions.
