TU Chemnitz Upholds Decision to Revoke Minister-President Voigt's Doctorate

The Faculty Council of TU Chemnitz has upheld its decision to revoke the doctorate of Mario Voigt, the Minister-President of Thuringia. Voigt's appeal against this ruling has been dismissed by the council.

While Voigt retains the option to pursue further legal challenges, the political repercussions are already apparent. Voigt, along with his counterparts from Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, recently initiated a dispute over pension reforms. This action has drawn criticism and placed Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a difficult position, as the pension package is a central policy of the current coalition government.

Voigt and his colleague Sven Schulze had previously endorsed the pension reforms in late June. Their current opposition is seen as a strategic move tied to upcoming elections in eastern Germany. The renewed controversy surrounding Voigt's academic credentials coincides with the pension debate, further complicating matters for the CDU party.

As a deputy chairman of the CDU's program and principles commission since 2022, Voigt has been involved in shaping the party's platform under Merz. The university's decision to withdraw his doctorate, coupled with his role in party policy, presents a challenge to his credibility and, by extension, that of the CDU, particularly in the context of the eastern elections.
