An investigation is ongoing into a train derailment that occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Horseshoe Curve, a historic landmark near Altoona. According to Norfolk Southern, about a dozen train cars were involved in the incident.

The westward-traveling train derailed around 3:23 p.m. near the visitor center. Norfolk Southern officials stated that senior communications manager Kasandra Jenkins confirmed no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were "yet confirmed" among the derailed cars. Crews were observed working on the partially tipped or overturned cars late Tuesday evening.

This incident marks the third derailment in or near the Horseshoe Curve in 2026. Previous events this year include a derailment of approximately 65 Norfolk Southern railcars in early February near Lake Altoona, and another involving about 17 railcars in early March approximately five miles from the Curve. No injuries were reported in either of those prior incidents.
