Death of Veteran Bhatli Representative

Former Odisha cabinet member Susant Singh passed away early Monday, July 27, 2026, while receiving medical care at a private facility in Bhubaneswar. The 53-year-old politician had been battling a long-term liver condition, according to family members. A recognizable figure in the western region of the state, Singh built a significant political career as a loyalist to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

A Decade of Legislative Service

Singh secured his place in the State Assembly by winning three successive elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019 representing the Bhatli constituency. During his tenure under the Naveen Patnaik administration, he held several high-profile portfolios including:

• Minister for Labour and Employment
• Minister for Rural Development

While his legislative streak ended in the 2024 Assembly elections with a loss to Irasis Acharya of the BJP, his influence within his party remained significant. Officials confirmed his remains will be transported to the State Assembly premises, allowing fellow legislators to pay their final respects before he is moved to his native village for funeral rites.
