Tracking the 5.5-Year Orbital Cycle

Amateur astronomers in Bengaluru have identified the return of Comet 10P/Tempel 2, a periodic visitor first documented in 1873. The celestial object, which follows an elliptical path around the Sun every 5.5 years, was last witnessed from Earth in 2021. While its orbital period is consistent, visibility varies significantly per cycle based on its proximity to our planet and its orientation relative to the Sun.

Optimal Viewing Windows and Technical Requirements

Deepak Choudhary, a local astronomy enthusiast who recently photographed the comet using a Seestar S50 smart telescope, indicates that visual quality is currently improving. Observers can expect peak visibility during the first week of August. Key transit dates include:

  • August 2: The comet reaches perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun. Solar heat enhances ice vaporization, expanding the coma and tail for better clarity.
  • August 3: The object makes its closest approach to Earth before beginning its outward journey and subsequent fading.

Current data suggests the comet will reach a magnitude of 8–9. At this brightness, the object remains invisible to the naked eye. Observers will require binoculars or small telescopes with apertures ranging from 80 mm to 150 mm. Clear, moonless conditions in locations shielded from urban light pollution provide the highest probability of a successful sighting.

Observation Challenges

Unlike widely known celestial events, the visibility of 10P/Tempel 2 is highly conditional. “Some returns are excellent, while others are much less favorable,” Choudhary noted, explaining that the comet's brightness depends on its position during each specific apparition. Following the mid-August window, the object will recede from the inner solar system, disappearing from view until its next scheduled return late this decade.
