A maritime outing near Thoothukudi turned into a recovery operation this week after two 16-year-old residents, X. Joshua and M. Manoj Kumar, lost their lives in the sea. The incident began on Sunday afternoon when a group of seven youths from the Tharuvaikulam area launched a fiber boat into the coastal waters.
Drift Leads to Dangerous Decision
Trouble emerged several hundred meters from the shoreline when strong winds began pushing the small vessel off its intended course. Faced with the drifting boat, four members of the group decided to jump overboard, intending to swim back to land. The remaining three occupants opted to stay with the craft. While search and rescue efforts successfully located the three stranded on the boat and two of the swimmers, Joshua and Manoj Kumar remained missing.
Search Operations and Recovery
Local fishermen joined forces with police units to conduct an intensive search of the area where the teens were last seen. These efforts concluded with the discovery of both bodies in the same vicinity where they had initially entered the water. Key details of the incident include:
- The deceased have been identified as 16-year-olds Joshua and Manoj Kumar.
- Five other companions survived the ordeal.
- Officials transported the remains to Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital for formal post-mortem procedures.
