Sonic Resilience: How Sheetal Menon Transformed Grief into Spotify’s First Short Film
Director Sheetal Menon breaks new ground with 'Duet,' a short film exploring isolation and musical connection starring Sidhant Gupta. The project marks a historic first for Spotify and captures the emotional weight of pandemic-era loss through a unique international collaboration.
Formerly a model and actor, Sheetal Menon once considered leaving the film industry altogether. The professional stagnation she faced eventually served as the catalyst for an unexpected career pivot. During a creative workshop, a story prompt provided by her husband, filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar, evolved from a simple improvisation exercise into a full screenplay. Despite having no formal training in screenwriting, Menon spent a year collaborating with co-writer Arpita Chatterjee to refine her vision, following her 2019 directorial debut, Sibling, with her latest project, Duet.
A Narrative of Melancholy and Connection
Duet features Jubilee star Sidhant Gupta as a pianist navigating the sudden death of his estranged brother during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The plot centers on a musical exchange between the protagonist and an unseen violinist, a dialogue that serves as a bridge back to hope. While the story is fictional, Menon describes its emotional core as a reflection of the collective trauma experienced globally during the pandemic. She notes that a prominent South Indian musician broke down in tears after reading the script, confirming that the theme of isolated despair resonated deeply with those who lived it.
Global Sounds and Technical Hurdles
Authenticity demanded significant preparation. Gupta, who had never played a musical instrument, underwent intensive coaching and practiced on a rented piano to inhabit the role of a grieving virtuoso. The soundtrack, which acts as the film's pulse, resulted from a year-long search for the right atmospheric tone. Menon reached out to international composers via Instagram, successfully recruiting New York-based Eric Christian, London's Ben Crosland, and Sydney-based Sid Acharya. While Christian and Crosland provided existing works, Acharya composed the film's original score.
Breaking the Distribution Ceiling
Despite the high production values, Duet remained unreleased on Menon’s hard drive for three years due to the lack of a viable distribution ecosystem for short-form cinema. The stalemate ended when producers Bejoy Nambiar and Harini Lakshminarayan suggested a strategic partnership with Spotify. The streaming giant agreed to host the film, marking its first-ever short film release on July 30. The film is also slated for a release on Getaway Pictures’ YouTube channel. Following this milestone, Menon has confirmed she is developing her first full-length feature film.
