Sivaganga authorities have detained two individuals in connection with the homicide of M. Poochiyammal, a 70-year-old woman from Vadakkan Valavu in Surakkudi. The suspects, identified as 33-year-old Chamundeeswari and her partner Saravanan, reportedly moved from Chennai to Surakkudi shortly before the incident. According to law enforcement officials, Saravanan orchestrated the crime to liquidate the victim's jewelry and resolve his personal financial liabilities.
The Timeline of the Crime
The incident began on July 25 when Poochiyammal, who resided with her husband, failed to return home after an evening walk. A search followed, ending the next day when her body was discovered in a canal adjacent to a local government school. Investigators with the S.V. Mangalam police station determined that Chamundeeswari, a native of the area, had lured the elderly woman into her residence. Once inside, the pair targeted the victim, using a blanket during the assault to end her life before disposing of her remains in the waterway.
Evidence Recovery and Arrest
While the suspects initially maintained their innocence during questioning, a search of their vehicle provided the forensic breakthrough needed for the arrest. Officers discovered a 10-sovereign gold chain inside the car, which was positively identified as belonging to the deceased. Key details of the investigation include:
