Fatal Case in Kozhikode

Biju, a 48-year-old autorickshaw driver from Naderi in the Koyilandy region, passed away Monday morning at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital. His death, recorded on July 27, 2026, follows a brief battle with amoebic meningoencephalitis. Medical professionals confirmed the diagnosis on July 22 after Biju reported a persistent fever earlier in the month.

Health department officials have launched immediate containment protocols in the victim's hometown. Despite these efforts, investigators have not yet pinpointed the exact environment where Biju contracted the pathogen.

Statewide Infection Data and Mortality

The latest fatality contributes to a concerning trend in Kerala’s public health data. Statistics from the Health department reveal:

  • July 2026 Snapshot: 14 confirmed infections and four fatalities recorded within the month.
  • Year-to-Date Impact: Since January 2026, the state has documented 155 cases and 41 total deaths.

Pathogen Profiles and Transmission

Health experts note the prevalence of two specific variants of the disease within the region. Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is triggered by Naegleria fowleri, commonly identified as the "brain-eating amoeba." This organism typically targets the brain by entering through the nasal passages during water-based activities like swimming or diving.

Conversely, granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) stems from organisms like Balamuthia mandrillaris and Acanthamoeba. These pathogens frequently gain entry via skin abrasions, wounds, or the inhalation of contaminated aerosols, eventually traveling through the bloodstream to the central nervous system.
