A remand prisoner in Repalle Sub-Jail attempted to end his life on Wednesday by cutting his throat with a vegetable knife. The incident occurred inside the jail kitchen.

The prisoner, identified as V. Srinivasa Rao, had been arrested on July 5 for the murder of an elderly woman and was in judicial custody. Police stated he surrendered at a station in connection with the case.

According to authorities, Mr. Rao entered the jail kitchen to access a bag of rice and allegedly used a knife found there to inflict the injury on himself. Jail staff discovered him bleeding significantly and transported him to Repalle Government Hospital. His condition required further transfer to Tenali Government Hospital, and subsequently to Guntur Government Hospital for advanced medical attention.

The police indicated that Mr. Srinivasa Rao was reportedly distressed because his bail requests had been denied. Jail officials confirmed that his wife and son had visited him.

The Repalle Town police have initiated an investigation and registered a case based on a complaint from jail authorities. The Superintendent of Police, B. Umamaheswar, stated that the murder case, involving a victim who was a woman, has been given high priority. He added that all bail petitions submitted by the accused have been opposed in court.
