Water Cannons Deployed on DYFI March in North Paravur

Commotion erupted in North Paravur on Friday afternoon as the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) marched towards Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s MLA office. The protest was sparked by the arrest of Youth Congress activists on charges of synthetic drug peddling, with DYFI alleging connections between these individuals and the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

What Happened

A significant police presence blocked the DYFI march with barricades erected at a distance from the MLA office. When protesters attempted to dismantle the barricades and refused to disperse, police deployed water cannons. The confrontation persisted for over an hour, significantly disrupting traffic in the vicinity until order was restored.

Background

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticized the government and Mr. Satheesan, characterizing the arrests of Youth Congress activists Muhammad Hussien, P.A. Abdul Salam, and P. Abbas as indicative of systemic issues within the CMO. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan stated that the accused had managed Mr. Satheesan’s social media accounts, including content that promoted the Chief Minister. He also noted the circulation of videos showing Mr. Satheesan interacting with the accused and visiting their residences. The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has accused the ruling UDF government of imposing an 'undeclared social media emergency,' citing the removal of posts and news reports concerning the arrests of Youth Congress leaders. Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan shared evidence of news reports detailing his statements about an accused individual's association with Mr. Satheesan being taken down. Chief Minister Satheesan has denied requesting Meta to remove any news related to him or his administration from Facebook.
