Authorities in Udupi district reached a breakthrough in a cold-case arrest this week. A police team, directed by the Karkala Town Sub-Inspector, successfully located 60-year-old Peter Augustin Martin on Monday. Officers apprehended the suspect in Ramasamudra, situated within Karkala Kasba village, following his evasion of legal proceedings since the late 1980s.
Legal Framework and the 1989 Charges
The arrest follows a long-standing non-bailable warrant issued by the Principal Civil Judge and JMFC Court in Karkala. Martin's legal troubles began in 1989 when a case was filed involving multiple violations of the Indian Penal Code. The specific charges against him included:
- Section 143: Unlawful assembly
- Sections 147 and 148: Rioting and rioting armed with deadly weapons
- Sections 447 and 448: Criminal trespass and house-trespass
- Sections 323 and 326: Voluntarily causing hurt and causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons
Current Judicial Status
After his capture, the police produced Martin before the court on July 27, 2026. The presiding magistrate ordered him into judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
