Pitbull Attack Leaves Punjab Couple with Severe Injuries, Plastic Surgery Required

A couple in Patiala, Punjab, suffered significant injuries when a pet Pitbull attacked them. The incident occurred as the couple, Ankit Sabharwal and Shifali Sabharwal, were visiting a house for rent in Ghuman Nagar with a property dealer. CCTV footage of the attack has circulated online.

The attack began when the house gate was opened, and the Pitbull suddenly emerged and lunged at Shifali, inflicting deep wounds on her arm and other parts of her body. Ankit Sabharwal also sustained bite injuries on his legs and back while attempting to protect his wife. Shifali was admitted to a private hospital, where she underwent plastic surgery. Her husband stated that the dog continued its attack despite its owner's commands.

Residents intervened using sticks to try and fend off the dog and separate it from the injured couple. Police have been informed and are investigating the incident. An FIR is expected to be registered under Section 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning injuries caused by a pet animal. Authorities indicated action would be taken regarding dangerous dog breeds, potentially including a campaign to investigate such cases.

Following the attack, Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia announced that the city intends to ban the keeping of aggressive dog breeds as pets. This proposal will be brought before the municipal corporation for discussion and a potential resolution. The incident has heightened concerns about public safety due to previous dog attacks in the city.
