The political transition began when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) spearheaded a no-confidence motion. The vote succeeded because four Congress council members broke party lines to support the opposition. As a result, the UDF lost its grip on the 26-member council just six months after taking power from the LDF. The Congress party responded to this defiance by expelling the four defectors for violating a direct party whip.
Current projections suggest the LDF, which holds 12 seats, will govern in tandem with the four expelled members. This 16-vote bloc, including acting chairperson Maya Rahul, is expected to align with the Kerala Congress (M) faction.
