According to a notice issued by the Registrar, the university intends to withdraw financial assistance for the event scheduled from August 3 to 6. Out of the ₹3.75 lakh sanctioned for the program, the varsity has already disbursed an advance of ₹2.81 lakh which it now seeks to reclaim.
Allegations of Code Violations
Interim Vice-Chancellor D. Mavoothu and university officials claim that the union’s publicity materials violate the Mahatma Gandhi University Students’ Code of Conduct Rules, 2005, and the University Code of Ethics. Authorities argue the materials defy a specific mandate prohibiting political content in university-funded events. The focus of the dispute is a poster depicting a cockroach standing before a boot, an image that gained traction during student protests in New Delhi regarding examination leakages.
While the varsity ordered the immediate removal of these banners from the campus entrance, the union refused to comply. The university subsequently rejected a formal explanation from union chairman M. Abhinav, who defended the imagery as artistic expression rather than partisan propaganda.
Union Defends Artistic Freedom
In his response to the Registrar, Abhinav asserted that the poster lacks any political party names, flags, or iconography. He argued that the cockroach functions as a symbolic representation of contemporary student issues rather than a promotion of specific party ideologies. The union maintains that the administration’s heavy-handed response stifles creative freedom on campus.
Meanwhile, the university Syndicate, which currently features members aligned with the United Democratic Front, has not yet intervened. Independent of the financial dispute, a university official noted that the students are free to seek legal remedies if they believe the fund withdrawal is unjustified. The situation remains a stalemate as the conference date approaches.
