NHAI Nears Selection of Alignment for New Kodungallur-Angamaly Bypass Corridor

Final Stages for the Kodungallur-Angamaly Link
Planning for the Kodungallur-Angamaly National Highway (NH) 544 bypass has reached its concluding phase. Authorities expect to freeze the alignment for the 18-km stretch within the next fortnight. The project, estimated to cost ₹360 crore, seeks to provide a high-speed alternative to the bottlenecked junctions around Angamaly, where commuters currently face chronic delays. Officials confirmed that the final inception report is complete, and the focus has shifted to the technical verification of various alignment options.
Integration with the Kochi Greenfield Bypass
This new project serves as an extension of the planned 50-km Aroor-Angamaly corridor, often referred to as the Kochi Bypass. The route is designed to merge with NH 544 at Karayamparambu, situated north of Angamaly. To realize this vision, a fresh 3A land acquisition notification is imminent, following the expiration of the original 2024 notice. The acquisition strategy involves the following specifications:
- A standard 45-metre-wide corridor for the greenfield bypass.
- Acquisition of an additional 12.5 metres on both sides.
- Future-proofing for a 10-lane configuration, though it will initially accommodate an eight-lane highway.
Strategic Economic and Urban Implications
The proposed bypass network will form a semi-circular transit loop around Kochi, significantly shortening travel times for air passengers and daily commuters from Thrissur and northern districts. Social media collective administrator Arjun Prakash noted that current toll-paying motorists at Paliyekkara deserve better maintenance of existing road shoulders and carriageways on the Edappally-Karayamparambu stretch. He also advocated for the construction of specific link roads to the Cochin International Airport and nearby towns to maximize the utility of the greenfield highway.
Decongestion and Zoning
By diverting heavy traffic from the two primary roads connecting Aluva and Perumbavur, the bypass is expected to act as a catalyst for Kochi's eastward expansion. Industry observers emphasize that the government must implement strict land zoning—delineating commercial and residential sectors—to manage the urban growth triggered by these new transit corridors.
