Enforcement of Dietary Restrictions and Cleanliness
As the Kanwar Yatra approaches its July 30 commencement, the Muzaffarnagar Food Safety Department has implemented a total ban on the preparation and sale of non-vegetarian food across all pilgrimage routes. Archana Dheeran, Assistant Commissioner of Food for Muzaffarnagar, confirmed on July 28, 2026, that the prohibition extends beyond meat to include the use of onions and garlic in cooking. Such measures reflect established local protocols that existing businesses follow annually, according to department officials.
Transparency and Compliance Protocols
In a move to ensure administrative transparency, hotels and roadside dhabas must now prominently display their ownership paperwork, operating licenses, and official QR codes for the Food Safety Connect app. To monitor these requirements, authorities have deployed six dedicated inspection teams. These officials are tasked with enforcing specific operational standards including:
- A strict prohibition on the sale of stale food.
- Mandatory use of gloves by all kitchen staff and cooks.
- A total ban on the use of artificial food coloring.
Price Controls and Safety Oversight
To protect pilgrims from economic exploitation, district leadership has established standardized pricing for 21 essential commodities. This price ceiling aims to prevent over-charging throughout the duration of the yatra. While these rules are recurring for long-standing establishments, the Food Safety Department is proactively briefing new business owners on the specific legal and dietary expectations before the influx of devotees begins.
