Missile Program Veteran Urges Deep Industry-Academic Integration for Defense Autonomy
Former DRDO Chief Controller Prahalada Ramarao advocates for a shift toward indigenous innovation to achieve national self-sufficiency. Speaking at the KCIRI Annual Day, he called for mission-first leadership to meet the goals of the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative.
Building a Sovereign Defense Ecosystem through Innovation
India's path to becoming a developed nation by 2047 depends on a fundamental shift from importing technology to creating robust, local solutions. Addressing engineering students at Kumaraguru Institutions on Monday, former DRDO Chief Controller Prahalada Ramarao emphasized the necessity of technical judgment and the courage to utilize failure as a developmental asset. He argued that engineering solutions must be specifically designed to serve the requirements of India's 1.4 billion citizens.
The Kalam Legacy: From Import Dependency to Export Success
The late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam dismantled administrative obstacles to foster a culture of national capability. During an era when India relied heavily on foreign military hardware, Dr. Kalam led the development of the Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Nag, and Trishul missile programs. Ramarao highlighted how Dr. Kalam’s foresight in the 1990s regarding supersonic cruise technology led to the BrahMos joint venture with Russia. This program serves as a definitive case study in self-sufficiency, as numerous countries now seek to procure the system. Ramarao noted that this validates the principle of 'Make for India, and the world will follow.'
New Partnerships in Aerospace and Precision Engineering
The Kumaraguru Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation (KCIRI) utilized its Annual Day to formalize new strategic alliances through two Memorandums of Understanding:
- SAARC Group: A partnership focusing on AI-enabled software and precision manufacturing for defense applications.
- AvioMinds Global Private Limited: An agreement to advance research in aerospace propulsion, specifically micro gas turbines and UAV technologies.
The event also recognized industry contributions from Satish of Cisco Energy Private Limited and Jayaprakash of Vetri Engineers. Ramarao, who also previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, concluded that removing procedural friction and tightening the bonds between academia and industrial partners are the essential requirements for total national autonomy.
