Manipur Highways: Kuki Group Lifts Blockade on NH-202, Naga Blockade on NH-2 Persists

The Kuki Civil Society Working Committee-Ukhrul has lifted its economic blockade on National Highway 202, also known as the Imphal-Ukhrul Road. The withdrawal of this blockade, which had been in place since July 27 and escalated to a total shutdown on August 5, followed an agreement with a Manipur government delegation. Approximately 300 trucks were able to depart for Imphal from Ukhrul district after the accord was reached.

This development occurred after the government informed the Kuki organization about an agreement between Naga and Meitei groups to end a selective blockade targeting the Kuki community on NH-202. The Kuki organization had imposed its counter-blockade in protest against this selective action.

Despite the lifting of the NH-202 blockade, the United Naga Council (UNC) continues its enforcement on National Highway 2, a vital transport artery. The UNC's blockade, which began on May 17, is a response to the abduction and subsequent recovery of the mutilated bodies of six Nagas. The organization has stated it will only lift the blockade if the government meets its demands, which include abrogating the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki rebel groups and prosecuting those responsible for the killings.
