Kishor Alerts Election Commission Over Alleged Deployment of Jeevika Workers in Bankipur

Ultimatum Issued to Election Commission
Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), has threatened a sit-in protest outside the Election Commission office in Patna unless immediate action is taken against alleged electoral misconduct. Speaking at a press conference on July 26, 2026, Kishor claimed the BJP is utilizing 'Jeevika Didis'—members of a state-run socio-economic empowerment initiative—to drive voter turnout and influence the Bankipur Assembly bypoll.
Kishor demanded that the Election Commission of India (ECI) formally prohibit any individuals associated with Jeevika or similar semi-government entities from participating in any election-related conduct. According to the JSP leader, his party delegation is scheduled to meet the poll panel's observer to present their grievances. He stated that if the commission fails to respond within 24 hours, he and his party leadership will occupy the space outside the ECI office starting Monday.
Allegations of Coercion and Administrative Overreach
The political strategist pointed to specific digital evidence to support his claims, citing a post from the Patna District administration's official X account. While the administration framed the activity as a voter awareness campaign, Kishor alleged these government-funded workers are actively campaigning for the BJP. Kishor's accusations include serious claims of voter intimidation:
- Jeevika Didis are allegedly threatening beneficiaries of state welfare programs.
- Voters are being told that government benefits will be terminated if they fail to support the BJP.
- The JSP classifies these actions as both unconstitutional and illegal interference in the democratic process.
A Challenge to the BJP Bastion
The Bankipur seat, previously held by five-term MLA Nitin Nabin, is a long-standing BJP stronghold. However, Kishor predicts a significant shift in the upcoming July 30 vote. He criticized the BJP's historical overconfidence in the district, suggesting the party has previously mocked the electorate by claiming they could win with any candidate regardless of merit. "The people have decided to punish the party for the slight," Kishor remarked, asserting that public sentiment is trending toward a desire for fundamental change.
The bypoll's outcome will be determined shortly after the vote, with official results expected on August 3, 2026. The JSP aims to disrupt the status quo in a contest that has now become a flashpoint for disputes regarding the neutral use of state machinery.
