Nandyal district has implemented a comprehensive water management strategy involving the restoration of thousands of local infrastructure projects and supply channels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognized these efforts during his July 26, 2026, national radio address.
Federal Recognition for Local Rainfall Management
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the water conservation transformation in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, during his Mann Ki Baat broadcast on July 26, 2026. The district is currently executing a month-long intensive campaign titled Catch the Rain, Where it Falls, When it Falls, which launched on July 4 and runs through August 4. This initiative focuses on reclaiming traditional water bodies and expanding storage to maximize the capture of monsoon runoff.
Data-Driven Restoration of Irrigation Infrastructure
The scale of the technical intervention spans nearly 500 local jurisdictions. According to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, the district successfully initiated 2,103 specific water conservation projects, reaching a 100% grounding rate. Key accomplishments in the ongoing campaign include:
- Desilting and rehabilitation of 2,691 kilometers of feeder and supply channels.
- Restoration projects for 251 minor irrigation tanks, with 225 already finalized.
- Maintenance and reinforcement of 22,221 farm ponds.
- Upgrades to 2,221 check dams and 202 percolation tanks.
By clearing these supply lines, officials have significantly improved the delivery of rainwater into the district's primary reservoirs and tank systems, effectively boosting groundwater recharge rates.
Scientific Mapping and Community Integration
The success of the program relies on a collaborative framework across multiple government departments. Technical teams conducted field surveys and mapping across 489 gram panchayats to prioritize watershed areas. This scientific approach integrated traditional knowledge by consulting village elders and local residents to identify the most effective intervention sites. To ensure transparency, all proposed engineering works underwent review by gram sabhas before implementation. This coordinated execution aims to secure the district's water future by optimizing every available drop of seasonal precipitation.
