Kerala Unleashes Massive Food Relief and Market Interventions for Onam Season
Food Minister Anoop Jacob announced the release of 1.66 lakh metric tonnes of rice and a ₹53-crore free kit initiative to stabilize prices during the festivals. Over 6 lakh low-income families will receive essential goods as the state ramps up distribution across specialized markets.
Market Inundation Strategy and Price Controls
In a direct move to stabilize food inflation ahead of the Onam festivities, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob confirmed the immediate release of significant grain reserves. The state will inject 1,65,932 metric tonnes of rice and 24,506 metric tonnes of wheat into the market to prevent predatory pricing. Non-priority blue card holders are set to benefit from a specific distribution window starting in August, offering rice at ₹10.90 per kg and wheat at ₹8.70 per kg.
₹53-Crore Welfare Kit Distribution
The Kerala government has authorized ₹53 crore to fund free Onam kits for 609,305 families. Targeted primarily at Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cardholders and welfare institution residents, each kit is valued at ₹854 and contains 16 essential items in a cloth bag. Distribution is scheduled to begin on August 10 and must be finalized by Uthradam day on August 25. This initiative is part of a broader ₹273 crore market intervention package.
Infrastructure and Governance Reforms
Addressing long-standing internal delays, Minister Jacob announced that the Supplyco audit, which has been stalled for five years, will be finalized by December. This backlog has currently blocked ₹300 crore in due funds from the Central government. New operational milestones for the department include:
- Opening the state's first 24-hour Supplyco outlet at Vyttila Mobility Hub this August.
- The imminent launch of Kerala's inaugural Grain ATM to streamline grain dispersal.
- Massive trade fairs in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode from August 8 to 25.
- District-level fairs across 11 regions and 126 Assembly constituency markets.
Fiscal Comparisons and Central Policy Disputes
The current administration highlighted a significant funding increase, reporting ₹448.05 crore received by the department in the first two months of the United Democratic Front (UDF) tenure. Jacob noted this stands in contrast to the ₹700 crore allocated for the entire previous fiscal year under the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Beyond internal funding, the state has formally petitioned the Central government to reverse grain allocation cuts for yellow card holders and to increase the kerosene quota, which has seen steady reductions despite rising public demand.
