Rockies Third Baseman Karros Departs After Infield Collision

Colorado Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros left the game Tuesday night after colliding with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar while attempting to field a ground ball. The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning at Chase Field during the Rockies' 3-2 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

As both infielders converged on a grounder hit by Arizona's Ketel Marte, Tovar's shoulder appeared to strike Karros's face, causing Karros to fall to the ground in apparent pain. Karros was able to walk off the field under his own power and was replaced by TJ Rumfield. Tovar remained in the game.

Earlier in the game, just 15 minutes prior to the collision, Karros hit a two-run home run to tie the score at 2-2, snapping the Rockies' 15-inning scoreless streak. This was his 10th home run of the season, scoring Tovar who had reached base on an infield single.

The Rockies took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Mickey Moniak's sacrifice fly scored Hunter Goodman. Colorado starter Tomoyuki Sugano recovered after a difficult first inning, during which he allowed home runs to Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. Sugano subsequently held Arizona scoreless for the next six innings, allowing only three hits after the first frame and escaping a sixth-inning bases-loaded jam with a double play.
