Infrastructure Upgrade: Phase One of Tirupattur Bypass Enters Final Stages
State highway officials expect to open a 5.2-km four-lane bypass between Ratchamangalam and S. Pallipattu shortly. The 41.50-crore project targets traffic congestion and accident rates in Tirupattur town.
Strategic Rerouting to Relieve Tirupattur Urban Core
State Highways Department officials are finalizing the initial 5.2-km segment of a new four-lane bypass connecting Ratchamangalam and S. Pallipattu. Collector G. Ravikumar recently audited the site, where crews are currently black-topping the stretch on Tirupattur-Singarapettai High Road (SH 18A). This infrastructure aims to intercept the 14,000 vehicles that currently funnel into Tirupattur town daily while traveling toward Chennai, Salem, and Krishnagiri.
S. Venketaraman, Assistant Executive Engineer for State Highways, noted that the bypass offers a direct route for long-distance commuters heading toward Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, and Bargur. By positioning the road 3 to 4 km away from the existing Singarapettai High Road, planners intend to lock heavy transport out of narrow municipal streets, thereby reducing urban accidents and providing faster access to the Salem-Vaniyambadi Highway (NH 179A).
Technical Specifications and Funding
Financed through the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP) 2023-24 at a cost of 41.50 crore, the project includes several modern safety and utility features:
- A 10-metre-wide carriageway with a 1.2-metre-wide median.
- Comprehensive lighting via LED streetlights and high mast lamps.
- Advanced safety hardware including road studs, reflectors, blinkers, and CCTV monitoring.
- Integration of footpaths and standardized signage.
Regional Connectivity and Phase Evolution
The completed 14.35-km bypass system will eventually link eight agricultural villages directly to the Tirupattur municipality. Local motorists will gain streamlined access to the district’s nerve centers, including the Collectorate, SP offices, bus terminus, and Government Taluk Hospital. Beyond city limits, the bypass facilitates movement for residents in the Natrampalli, Jolarpet, and Tirupattur Panchayat Unions, providing a clearer path to Ambur, Vaniyambadi, and Vellore. Resident K. Satish highlighted that the new stretch is a necessary relief for local drivers who currently face significant delays due to continuous heavy vehicle inflow.
