Indian Navy Expands Coastal Fleet with Machilipatnam Launch at Cochin Shipyard

Seventh Mahe-Class Vessel Enters the Water

The Indian Navy expanded its littoral warfare capabilities on July 29, 2026, with the launch of Machilipatnam (BY 529). As the seventh of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW SWC) currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the vessel represents a mature stage in the current domestic warship-building cycle. Mrs. Goolrukh Anand performed the launch honors in Kochi alongside the Additional Secretary for the Department of Military Affairs and senior naval leadership.

Strategic Design and Indigenous Integration

The Machilipatnam is engineered specifically for shallow-water operations that require high agility and specific sensor suites. Its operational profile includes:

• Underwater surveillance and anti-submarine detection
• Mine warfare and countermeasure tasks
• Low-intensity maritime operations in coastal zones
• Enhanced domain awareness within the Indian Ocean Region

A primary feature of the ASW SWC project is its adherence to self-reliance targets. The vessel incorporates over 80% indigenous content, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This high level of domestic integration supports the local defense manufacturing sector while reducing hardware dependence on foreign suppliers.

Legacy and Coastal Defense

The ship's name pays tribute to the historic port city in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, recognizing its centuries-old status as a vital trading center on the eastern seaboard. Beyond its symbolic value, the commissioning of the Machilipatnam will provide the Navy with a specialized platform for safeguarding territorial waters. By modernizing its fleet with these shallow-water assets, the Navy aims to increase its overall operational readiness against underwater threats in the littoral zone.
