The 12th edition of the Malabar River Festival officially launches this Thursday, July 30, 2026, solidifying Kozhikode district's status as a global hub for white-water kayaking. Beyond the prestige of international competition, this year's event serves as the platform for the National Kayakers’ Ranking Championship. Organized in coordination with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA), these outcomes will explicitly dictate the national standings for India’s competitive field.

Athletes from diverse regions including Ladakh, Meghalaya, Karnataka, and Kerala will compete against an international roster representing New Zealand, Italy, Russia, Malaysia, Nepal, and the Czech Republic. To preserve the spirit of local engagement, organizers have maintained a specific category dedicated to regional paddlers from South India.

Tactical Preparation and Safety Protocol

Comprehensive logistical reviews were finalized at Kodenchery under the direction of Thiruvambady MLA C.K. Kasim and District Collector M.S. Madhavikkutty. Technical safety and timing are being managed by Adventure Sports Systems and Timing, with field support provided by the Kerala Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and disaster management units. Training sessions concluded on Wednesday, July 29, to familiarize teams with the varied currents of the Chalipuzha and Iruvanjipuzha rivers.

Scheduled Events and Disciplines

The championship focuses on three core disciplines: Kayak Slalom, Boater Cross, and the Downriver Race. The schedule follows a structured four-day rollout:

• Thursday, July 30: An inaugural procession through Kodenchery at 3 p.m. led by Agriculture Minister T. Siddique and MLA C.K. Kasim.
• Friday, July 31: Official competition begins at 9 a.m. at the Pulikkayam International Kayaking Centre, ending with a live concert by Rockstar Kaushik.
• Saturday, August 1: National Ranking rounds commence. High-profile attendees, including Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, will join the evening's cultural conference.
• Sunday, August 2: Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar will open the Pulloorampara events, followed by a final prize ceremony led by Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh.

Extensive grassroots outreach preceded the main event, featuring monsoon treks, mud football in Omassery, and off-road drives across eight local panchayats to maximize community participation in the festival.
