Four Arrested in Karnataka Businessman Car Blast Attempt

Authorities in Karnataka's Bagalkot district have apprehended four people accused of orchestrating a car blast in an attempt to kill businessman Hanumant Athani. The incident occurred in Hippargi village on July 25. Athani survived the blast, which took place in front of a bar, because he was not inside his vehicle at the time.

The arrested individuals are Shivanand Parasappa Jalli, 29; Revanappa Ningappa Jalli, 24; Mahadev Beerappa Sangapur, 21; and Mallikarjun Murageppa Bhadrapanavar, 23. They face charges including attempted murder and making death threats against Hanumant Athani. Investigators are also questioning two individuals suspected of selling the gelatin sticks used in the explosives. Another accused, Gajanan Sangapur, who allegedly facilitated the explosives, remains at large.

According to police sources, the primary motive behind the alleged plot stems from a land and financial dispute between Shivanand Jalli and Athani. The dispute originated when Shivanand Jalli’s paternal uncle owed Athani approximately ₹40 lakh. This debt led to the transfer of about four acres of land to Athani. Shivanand Jalli later took possession of the land, agreeing to repay the loan with interest, which had grown to around ₹65 lakh. When he failed to repay, Athani reportedly began pressuring him and demanded he vacate the land and house. Police believe this escalating financial pressure drove Shivanand Jalli to plan the murder to avoid repayment and retain ownership of the property.
