Established in 1876, the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science emerged as a cornerstone of national self-reliance. This pioneering institution bridged the gap between colonial limitations and world-class discovery, most notably hosting the research that led to the Raman Effect.

The Architect of Scientific Autonomy
In the late 19th century, Bengal served as the epicenter of a profound transformation known as the Bengal Renaissance. This movement reshaped the region's approach to philosophy, education, and the arts. Within this context, Mahendralal Sircar emerged as a vocal critic of the colonial administration's failure to provide research opportunities for Indians. Sircar argued that the path to societal improvement lay in the mastery of physical sciences. By 1869, he utilized the Calcutta Journal of Medicine to propose a national venue for scientific inquiry. At an 1872 meeting of the Bethune Society, he explicitly noted that the government offered no encouragement for native residents to pursue science. This persistent advocacy led to the historic founding of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) on July 29, 1876.
Raman’s Breakthrough and the Vision Realized
The IACS reached its zenith of global visibility through the work of C.V. Raman. After discovering the institution by chance in 1907 via a simple signboard, Raman was granted laboratory access by Amrit Lal Sircar, the founder’s son. Raman maintained a grueling schedule for a decade, conducting experiments in the early mornings and late evenings while working full-time at the Accountant General’s Office. Even after accepting a professorship at the University of Calcutta in 1917, Raman kept the IACS as his primary research hub. His dedication culminated on February 28, 1928, with the announcement of the Raman Effect. This discovery secured the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, marking the first time an Asian scientist received the honor in a scientific discipline.

The 150th anniversary of the IACS honors more than just a physical space; it celebrates an ideological shift from passive learning to active creation. Mahendralal Sircar’s foresight created a framework that allowed Indian researchers to engage in high-level inquiry on their own terms.
