Educationist R.K. Patil Honored at 137th Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha Foundation Day

Recognition for Cross-Border Linguistic Advocacy

During the 137th foundation day celebrations of the Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha (KVS) in Dharwad on July 26, educationist R.K. Patil received the Patil Puttappa award. The ceremony, held on the KVS premises, highlighted Patil’s six-decade effort to maintain Kannada-medium schooling within Maharashtra. As the head of the Shivalingeshwar Education Society in Jath taluk, Patil has managed to sustain regional language education despite what speakers described as a challenging political environment.

Systemic Challenges in Border Education

The event served as a platform for speakers to address the precarious state of Kannada education. B.L. Patil, founder of the Vimochana Organisation, raised alarms regarding the Maharashtra government’s systematic closure of Kannada-medium schools in border districts. He specifically noted that Patil’s institution in Sank remains a rare stronghold for the language. Social and political hurdles cited during the assembly include:

• Policy Restrictions: KVS honorary vice-president Ajit Prasad noted that state authorities are blocking the recruitment of new teachers for vacant posts.
• Financial Strain: Private managements currently carry the full economic weight of operations without sufficient state support.
• Political Will: KVS vice-president Sanjeev Kulkarni argued that a lack of political assertiveness historically led to the loss of Kannada-speaking territories to neighboring states.

Critique of English-Medium Dominance

B.L. Patil offered a scathing review of the current pedagogical trend toward English-medium instruction. He asserted that approximately 90% of students in the region are taught in languages they do not master, which stifles original thought and creativity. According to B.L. Patil, parental pressure forces children into environments where they primarily memorize content for examinations rather than gaining a comprehensive education.

Academic Success in Mother-Tongue Instruction

In his acceptance speech, R.K. Patil demonstrated that linguistic preservation does not come at the cost of academic rigor. His institution offers pre-university (PU) science courses in Kannada, attracting students from across Karnataka. Key milestones of his work include:

• Providing affordable vocational and science courses to ease the financial load on rural families.
• Mandating the use of Kannada numerals to reinforce cultural literacy.
• Achieving high success rates in science education despite the complexities of technical translation.

The celebration also saw the release of a new booklet titled Patil Puttappa, authored by C.U. Bellakki and published by the Karnataka Kulapurohita Alur Venkatarao National Memorial Trust.
