DoorDash Secures FAA Certification to Launch Proprietary Drone Fleet
The delivery giant has unveiled DoorDash Air, an internal robotics initiative featuring custom-built aircraft. Having secured a Part 135 air carrier certification, the company plans to integrate drones into a unified logistics network.
The Path to Autonomous Logistics
DoorDash has formally introduced DoorDash Air, a specialized division within its robotics and autonomy team dedicated to building and operating a proprietary fleet of delivery aircraft. This expansion follows the acquisition of a Part 135 air carrier certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a legal prerequisite for conducting commercial drone operations nationwide. While the company has not yet published a specific rollout calendar, the strategy involves initial pilot programs focused on short-range flights within the operator's direct line of sight.
To achieve long-range autonomous capabilities, DoorDash must eventually secure FAA approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) technology. This would place the firm alongside industry peers like Amazon, Zipline, and Alphabet's Wing in the race for automated airspace. Despite the development of internal hardware, management confirmed that existing collaborations with third-party providers Wing and Flytrex will continue. These partnerships previously saw service expansions in Australia in 2022 and North American markets like Dallas-Fort Worth in 2024.
Hardware Meets Integrated Software
DoorDash Air emerged from DoorDash Labs, the same research and development wing responsible for Dot, a 350-pound autonomous sidewalk robot debuted in September 2025. These ground-based units currently navigate suburban environments in Fremont, California, and the Arizona cities of Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler. Stanley Tang, co-founder and chief product officer, maintains that these hardware projects solve specific customer logistics hurdles rather than serving as mere technical showcases.
The backbone of this initiative is the Autonomous Delivery Platform. This proprietary operating system serves as a central clearinghouse for logistics decisions, determining in real-time whether a human courier, a sidewalk bot, or a drone is the most efficient choice for a specific order. According to Tang, the company is managing the entire technological stack, which includes:
- Design and manufacturing of internal drone hardware
- Embedded systems for flight and navigation
- Real-time routing algorithms for a multimodal workforce
- Software synchronization between human and robotic agents
A Unified Delivery Network
By controlling both the physical robots and the software that dispatches them, DoorDash aims to differentiate itself from competitors who focus on single layers of autonomy. Tang argues that the primary challenge lies in the complexity of running these diverse systems on a single network. This vertical integration allows the platform to adjust dynamically to urban delivery demands, treating autonomous drones as a integrated component of their broader labor pool rather than a standalone experiment.
