Ex-Donegal Footballer James McHugh and Wife Noreen Die in Co Cavan Crash

What Happened

A road traffic collision on the N3 at Drummallaght, County Cavan, resulted in the deaths of former Donegal footballer James McHugh and his wife, Noreen McHugh. The crash, involving a car and a van, happened on Monday afternoon. James McHugh, who was driving the car, died at the scene. His wife, Noreen, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital, where she passed away on Tuesday evening. The driver of the van suffered minor injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly those who were on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan between 1pm and 2pm on Monday, or who may have dashcam footage, to come forward.

Background

James McHugh was a prominent member of the Donegal team that won the 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the county's first. He played for Donegal from 1990 to 1998 and was awarded an All-Star in 1992. He also won two Ulster championships and a Railway Cup. McHugh played alongside his brother, Martin, in the 1992 final victory over Dublin. He also achieved success at club level with Cill Chartha, winning multiple Donegal county titles and national Gaeltacht titles.

Donegal GAA and his club, CLG Chill Chartha, have paid tribute to James McHugh, describing him as a significant figure in the county's football history and a respected member of the community. All club activities were suspended as a mark of respect.
