Vellore Collector Inspects Amirthi Zoo for Facility Upgrades

Vellore Collector P.S. Leela Alex visited Amirthi Zoological Park on Thursday to oversee improvements in basic amenities. The inspection included assessments of seating, the interpretation centre, washrooms, and the canteen.

An increase in visitor numbers, particularly during holidays, has led to requests for additional washrooms and drinking water facilities. The zoo, classified as a mini-zoo since 1967, spans 25 hectares in the Jawadhu Hills and currently houses 17 enclosures, primarily featuring reptiles and peacocks. Its collection includes deer, birds, snakes, porcupines, crocodiles, white peacocks, and star tortoises. Spotted deer are the most numerous species, with 150 individuals.

Collector Alex also urged zoo officials to pursue acquiring more forest land. Expansion could allow for the inclusion of more wild species, including carnivores, for educational purposes, pending approval from the Central Zoo Authority.

Visitor feedback highlighted the need for easier access, with suggestions for improved road conditions, more frequent bus services, and adequate eateries.
